Hands On Learning Company was developed out of concern for the lack of differentiation, creativity and hands- on learning opportunities within the current public education paradigm. The test score driven culture that predominates many educational institutions leaves little time or energy for students to create, reflect and explore their own strengths, abilities and interest.
Invention and design are being sacrificed on the altar of normed measurement and results which fail to value a child’s individual gifts and talents and opportunities for ‘discovery’ so he or she can know what these might be.
The current “cookie cutter” approach to educating students hampers free thinking, creativity, open ended problem (in real-life there is no predetermined one correct answer -) there are often multiple approaches and good solutions to solving problems as there are often different paths to arrive at various destinations.
Almost everything is already done for the students-all they have to do is show up, sit still and allow the what, how, when and why of learning to be imposed upon them. – No real inquiry or discovery required.
This does little to prepare youths to handle the unexpected challenges facing them in the “real world” which requires challenging, adjusting to, critically thinking through complicated and often unpredictable situations and taking some good educated guesses and choices with the hope of arriving at good and maybe even unexpectedly better or even more amazing outcomes than were expected.
It is hoped that such self-motivated out of the box type of thinking inspires future innovators, creators and designer of upcoming solutions to current and yet to be discovered needs.
Parents and families can benefit because students will be encouraged to share information with their parents. Parents will also be invited to come in at least once a week to receive training so they can be empowered with information that can be used to support their children outside of the classroom.
